CRUISE TOURISM SUPPORTS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

The sales tax generated from cruise tourism benefits the entire community. When cruise ship passengers disembark and explore our town, they spend money on a wide range of goods and services, from dining and shopping to tours and excursions. The revenue generated from these activities directly contributes to our local tax base, helping to fund essential community services, school, and infrastructure improvements. With a sustainable and balanced cruise tourism sector, we are investing in a stronger and more vibrant Sitka for all residents.

In fact, the 2024 summer season, approximately $2 million was earned for School Infrastructure through the 1% seasonal sales tax.

Opportunities for Prosperity

We understand the significance of creating opportunities for our young people and nurturing new business development. In a community where traditional employment options—like commercial fishing—pose significant barriers to entry and other professions are scarce, cruise tourism emerges as a shining beacon of hope.

Cruise Tourism provides a platform for entrepreneurs to start new businesses and young professionals to thrive in the industry.

From intimate nature guiding enterprises to operating a food truck, our vital cruise industry helps pave the way for an array of rewarding careers. By fostering the development of cruise tourism, we are safeguarding Sitka as a community where our youth can flourish and succeed.
